About the event

It seems like the 60s was a time of love and freedom? Not for all. Homosexuality at that time was considered a mental disorder. PSA’s warned young people about the threat of “homosexual predators”. The police caught people with the help of setting up fake dates. Transgender people in New York State were targeted by a “criminal dressing” law dating back to the 19th century.

The raid on the Stonewall Inn became a boiling point and erupted into nights of pandemonium with tear gas, billy clubs and a small army of tactical police.

This event is dedicated to the documentary “Stonewall Uprising” by Kate Davis and David Heilbroner. It contains the impressions of participants in the riot, reports from the local newspaper, and even the story of the policeman who led the raid.

Kate Davis and David Heilbroner have been producing award-winning documentaries for 15 years, with wins at Sundance, Chicago, San Francisco and Hot Docs film festivals, as well as an Emmy and an Oscar nomination in 2018.

Come to the Estonian Film Museum on June 8 at 19:00 to see Stonewall Uprising on the big screen.
